Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect the sensor to Wi-Fi?

Setup takes a few minutes using your iPhone or Android phone, with no app to install.

Plug the sensor in close to your router and wait a couple minutes.

iPhone

  • Locate the Wi-Fi settings, and under Available Networks select Sensor Setup. Wait 30 seconds for it to show Connected or a Checkmark.
  • If a No internet connection page appears, open any browser like Firefox or Chrome, and enter http://192.168.4.1
  • When the Connect this sensor to Wi-Fi page appears, choose your home network from the drop-down list and enter your password. A Connection established page indicates your Wi-Fi credentials are saved in the sensor. It will connect to your ESP32Services.com dashboard page in a few minutes.

Android

  • Locate the Wi-Fi settings, and under Available Networks select Sensor Setup. Wait 30 seconds for it to show Connected. If a page showing Internet may not be available appears, choose Connect only this time.
  • Open any browser like Firefox or Chrome, and enter http://192.168.4.1  A Connect this sensor to Wi-Fi page should appear. Choose your home network from the drop-down list and enter your password. A Connection established page indicates your Wi-Fi credentials are saved in the sensor. It will connect to your ESP32Services.com dashboard page in a few minutes.

* If the sensor doesn’t connect, verify that your password and network name are correct. Move the sensor closer to your Wi-Fi router to improve signal strength.

* Most routers use one network name and password for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, so your usual password will work. If your router has a separate 2.4 GHz or guest network with its own password, you can find it by logging into your router.

Still can’t connect to Wi-Fi?

Most setups work first time. If yours doesn’t, one of these is usually the reason.

The setup page doesn’t appear

  • Your phone left Sensor Setup. Sensor Setup has no internet, so some phones quietly switch back to your home Wi-Fi or to mobile data. When your phone asks whether to stay connected, choose Stay connected, Keep or Connect only this time. If the page still won’t open, turn off mobile data for a minute and try again.
  • A VPN is running on your phone. A VPN app can send the request somewhere other than the sensor. Pause it during setup and turn it back on afterwards.
  • Your browser warns that the page isn’t secure. The setup page only passes between your phone and the sensor, so it’s safe to continue. Tap Continue to site (or Advanced, then Proceed).

Your home network isn’t in the list

  • Move the sensor closer to the router, then tap Don’t see your network? Refresh the list.
  • Your Network name is hidden. See the router settings below.

Router settings that may need changing

You can usually change these in your router’s app or settings page. If you’re not sure how, your internet provider can help.

  • Turn on 2.4 GHz. Some routers only broadcast a 5 GHz channel by default, have it switched off, or only offer it on a separate network. Turn 2.4 GHz on, or use the router’s 2.4 GHz or guest network.
  • Show your network name. If your router hides its name, make it visible while you set up the sensor. You can hide it again afterwards.
  • Allow WPA2. If your router is set to WPA3 only, change it to WPA2/WPA3 (sometimes called mixed or transition mode). On an Android phone, you can see the WPA2 / 3 setting by selecting the Gear icon for the currently connected network.
  • Approve new devices. If your router only lets approved devices join, or asks you to approve new ones in its app, allow the sensor.

Networks the sensor can’t use

  • Wi-Fi with its own sign-in page, as in some apartment buildings and hotels.
  • Networks that ask for a username as well as a password, as at many workplaces.

Do the sensors work with 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No, like many consumer connected devices, our Activity and Sleep sensors only connect on 2.4 GHz home networks.

How do I manage Activity Sensor email alerts?

From the Activity Sensor Settings menu on your phone or desktop dashboard page, select Email Alerts On/Off. This opens a dialog box that allows you to toggle Inactivity alerts On/Off. The inactivity alert period can be changed from the default 12 hours to a 6–24 hour period.

To send alerts to up to two more people, select Add Email Recipients from the same menu.

How do I get push notifications on my phone?

Push notifications make your phone sound and show an alert as soon as an Activity Sensor alert goes out, so you notice it even when an email sits unread. They go to one phone per account and cover all your sensors. Email alerts continue as before.

From a computer: on your dashboard, select Email Alerts On/Off from the Settings menu and check Send push notifications to your phone. Scan the QR code that appears with your phone’s camera, sign in on your phone, and tap Turn on push notifications, then Allow.

From your phone: open the same box on your phone, check it, tap Save Changes, then Allow.

iPhone: push notifications need iOS 16.4 or later and work only from the Home Screen. In Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Open ESP32 Services from that icon, sign in, and finish from Email Alerts On/Off.

Samsung Galaxy phones: Samsung shows website notifications without a pop-up until you allow it, once. Open Settings, then Notifications, then Advanced settings, and turn on Manage notification categories for each app. Then tap Send test, pull down the notification list, press and hold the test notification and tap the gear icon. Open Notification categories, tap dashboard.esp32services.com, and turn on Alert and pop-ups.

Tap Send test to check that your phone sounds and shows the alert. If it stays silent, make sure Do Not Disturb is off and that notifications for the site are allowed in your phone’s settings. On other Android phones, turning on Pop on screen for these notifications shows them as a banner.
